About the VMTH

Completed in 1970, the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) has grown to where a skilled and diverse staff of about 300 FTE supports more than 100 residents and 80 faculty members in 27 services, from anesthesia to zoological medicine. While the VMTH does not offer internship programs*, there are more than 200 applicants each year to our residency programs. Approximately 17,600 dogs, 4,500 cats, 4,900 horses in the hospital and another 4,000 in the field, 1,000 cows, 200 sheep, 250 goats, 150 pigs and 1,400 exotics are seen each year. About 1,300 major and 500 minor large animal surgeries, and 2,500 major and 1,700 minor small animal surgeries are performed each year. An average of 75 small animals and 90 large animals are hospitalized at any one time. The large animal and small animal ICUs each provide approximately 2,000 patient days of care annually, with an overall recovery rate of 75%. The VMTH at UC Davis is now considered to be one of the best veterinary teaching hospitals in the world, with excellent teaching, patient care, and clinical research being carried out by a highly professional team.
