Surgery and Lameness
Two elective Equine Surgery and Lameness services provide indepth
diagnostic evaluation and treatment for horses with a
variety of orthopedic and soft tissue disorders. Regional and intraarticular
analgesia and advanced imaging techniques are applied to
facilitate diagnosis of challenging equine lameness. Other services
offered include the diagnosis and treatment of upper respiratory
conditions, sinus disease and dental abnormalities; surgical oncology;
reconstructive surgery; minimally invasive surgical techniques
such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and laser surgery via fiber optic
endoscopes; and performance testing of equine athletes.
Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance
Capabilities in equine sports medicine have recently been enhanced
significantly by completion of the Claire Giannini Hoffman Equine
Athletic Performance Laboratory (EAPL). This state-of-the art climate
controlled facility includes two high-speed Mustang treadmills, a
video motion analysis system, and the laboratory equipment and
support necessary to perform in-depth investigations of respiratory,
cardiac, musculoskeletal, and metabolic causes of poor performance
and exercise intolerance. The EAPL is home to an integrated
multidisciplinary clinical and research equine sports medicine program
anchored by Dr. Jim Jones, an internationally renowned equine exercise
physiologist, and supported by faculty from the Equine Surgery and
Lameness (Drs. MacDonald, Galuppo and VanHoogmoed), Ultrasound
(Drs. Whitcomb and Vaughan), and Medicine (Dr. Aleman) services.
Surgical Emergency and Critical Care
The Surgical Emergency and Critical Care service provides
24-hour access to specialized emergency surgery, intensive care,
and anesthesia services and laboratory support for the diagnostic
evaluation and management of colic, trauma, orthopedic injury,
and dystocia requiring surgical intervention.
