PROGRAM IN MARINE MAMMAL MEDICINE AND PATHOLOGY AT

Applications must be received by March 21, 2008. The Marine Mammal Center in collaboration with the University of California (Davis) has an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Intern to work in our Veterinary Science Department. This is a one-year internship which is scheduled to start in mid-summer 2008, ending in mid-summer 2009. This position requires a DVM degree or equivalent. Previous marine mammal or wildlife experience is preferred. Preference will also be given to individuals who possess at least one year of clinical veterinary experience. The Marine Mammal Center veterinary staff includes two full-time veterinarians, four veterinary technicians, and a medical laboratory technician. The Veterinary Intern's responsibilities include assisting the veterinary staff in providing medical management of a large number of marine mammals; mostly pinnipeds that are at The Marine Mammal Center for rehabilitation after having been stranded on the California coast due to injury, disease or malnutrition.The Intern will also be responsible for post mortem examinations, collecting samples for various research projects, and record-keeping. A research paper or case report should be completed during the internship. Housing |
||||
| Shared housing is available at no cost in the intern/extern housing unit located within the Marin Headlands. The house is shared with other students, researchers, externs and an intern. Linens are provided. Intern/Externs are required to provide their own personal supplies, food, cooking, and towels. Space is limited so guests cannot be accommodated. |

| Transportation |
||||
| Transportation is the intern/extern's responsibility. The housing is approximately 2 miles from TMMC. Bicycles are acceptable transportation between The Center and the housing and to get around the Marin Headlands where The Center is located. A car is necessary for transportation outside of the Marin Headlands, to go to a grocery store, shopping, restaurants, bars, movies, etc. The intern/extern is strongly encouraged to have a car available. |

Clothing |

| Weather conditions can vary tremendously within the park and the intern/extern should plan accordingly. Waterproof protective clothing is necessary when working with the animals. |
DIRECTIONS |

| From San Francisco Airport (SFO) take Highway 101 North to 380 West to end up on Highway 280 North. Stay toward the left lanes and take 19th Avenue to the Golden Gate Bridge. Once you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, exit at Alexander Avenue. Stay to the right after exiting and turn at the first left into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Proceed through the one-way tunnel. After the tunnel, the first group of buildings will include the student housing. Turn at the first right, and then immediately into the first driveway on the left. The house is 854B, which is the further of the two units that make up the house. To get to The Center continue on the main road for approx. 2 miles staying to the right at each fork. Once you arrive at The Center, park in visitor parking along the side of the hill and announce yourself at the kiosk. The Center gate opens at 10:00, so plan on arriving at that time on the first day. |
