Internship Information

The intern in Equine Field Service is a participant in our practice, and under faculty supervision has clinical responsibility for cases assigned to the Equine field Service and other sections of the Large Animal Clinic including, but not limited to, Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery and Lameness, and Equine Reproduction. Under the direction of the senior faculty of the Equine Field Service and appropriate clinical specialty units, the intern examines, conducts diagnostic procedures, and prescribes treatment for outpatients and for patients admitted to the Large Animal Clinic. The intern will participate in all phases of the operation of the Equine Field Service, which includes assisting faculty members in the clinical instruction of fourth-year veterinary students; and organizing and scheduling patients for daily programs of the Large Animal Clinic including the weekly Large Animal Grand Rounds. Interns share out-of-hours emergency duty with other house staff on a rotational basis and are on call approximately 1 night and 1 weekend out of every 2. Interns must be able to arrive at the Hospital within 15 minutes of an emergency call, therefore, interns must plan to live within 15 miles of the Hospital. Out-of-clinic time for development of a clinical research project and creative writing is scheduled.

The intern works with several faculty members who are diplomates of several specialty colleges; ACVIM, ACVS, ACVT, ACVR, and ACVO. The internship program is designed to qualify the individual to enter an approved equine residency training program or to assume a position in a high quality equine private practice. Lectures are provided to develop clinical expertise, and there is an opportunity to participate in journal club. Participation in the Annual House Officer Seminar Day is optional.

• To provide clinical teaching experience in equine medicine and surgery.
  
• To provide an opportunity for limited experience in the design and conduct of investigative projects in a clinically related area.
  
• To qualify the resident for eventual board certification in internal medicine.

The Equine Field Service internship program provides intensive post-doctoral training in equine internal medicine and surgery with an emphasis on primary care. Upon completion of the internship the candidate will be qualified to apply for an equine residency program or a position as an associate in a high quality equine private practice.

The facilities and clinical case load of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital provide an ideal environment for this internship program.

The internship provides broad clinical exposure in Equine Field Service Medicine which includes lameness, minor surgical procedures and some reproduction, In-House Medicine (Equine), and Equine Surgery. Faculty from the School of Veterinary Medicine will provide clinical instruction to the intern with collaborative assistance of other schools and departments.

The internship program shall be of one year's duration, commencing August 1, 2008.

• The intern will spend 11 months of the time in the Large Animal Medicine Services of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The intern will spend some of the time on Equine Field Service and the remaining time rotating between Equine Medicine, Equine Surgery, and elective block. The intern will develop an understanding of the general concepts of disease processes, case management and client communications in the primary and referral care of horses. This will include clinic rotations through the equine field service as well as equine medicine and surgery services including regular night and emergency weekend duties on a rotating basis.The intern will have primary patient care responsibilities under the supervision of the senior clinician. This will include all routine cases as well as referred cases with specific medical or surgical problems. A primary objective of the internship year will be the development of clinical maturity and judgement. The intern will be provided with the opportunity to develop his/her teaching skills. One of the intern's roles is that of clinical instructor. The intern will perform this duty in the clinical area by assisting in the tutorial teaching of junior and senior veterinary students and conducting rounds.
  
• The intern will develop abilities to critically evaluate veterinary literature and to obtain a broad scientific base for the understanding of medical problems.The internship program will include school and campus associated seminars and conferences, as well as full use of the available library resources. The intern will participate in the Large Animal Medicine house staff weekly seminars and journal club.
  
• All interns are strongly advised to obtain a California license within the first year in order to write prescriptions.

The salary for the internship is $26,112 plus benefits.
