RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN POULTRY MEDICINE
 
Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited school of veterinary medicine and a one-year internship or equivalent experience. The selection of residents is made on the basis of academic achievement, career objectives, letters of recommendation and pertinent experience.

The objectives of the Poultry Medicine residency program are: (1) to provide residency training in epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical management, and prevention of economically important diseases in domestic poultry species, (2) to provide experience in designing, implementing and reporting clinical research trials related to poultry diseases and their management, (3) to provide assistance to senior clinicians in the delivery and administration of clinical poultry medicine services to clients of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, and (4) to provide limited experience in teaching clinical poultry medicine to veterinary students and students in the M.P.V.M. degree program.  The resident will spend approximately 75% of the appointment in the Poultry Medicine practice of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, often in poultry production areas removed from Davis.  In this capacity, the resident will be responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of client programs with concurrence of the faculty.  The resident will spend approximately 25% of the appointment in investigative work or other training pertaining to domestic poultry disease and participation in rounds and seminars.  Participation in the Annual House Officer Seminar Day is mandatory.

The VMTH is committed to building strong relationships with its constituents.  A major part of the residents duties, therefore, includes timely communication with referring veterinarians and clients.

The current salary for the first year of the residency program is $34,584, with 16 hours of vacation accrued monthly.  Continuation into the second year is contingent upon satisfactory performance.

ALL RESIDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO OBTAIN A CALIFORNIA LICENSE WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE RESIDENCY IN ORDER TO WRITE PRESCRIPTIONS.

RESIDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO ARRIVE AT THE HOSPITAL WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF AN EMERGENCY CALL, THEREFORE, RESIDENTS MUST PLAN TO LIVE WITHIN 15 MILES OF THE HOSPITAL.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT NEW RESIDENTS BE AVAILABLE TO BEGIN THEIR RESIDENCY PROGRAM ON AUGUST 1, 2001.
