To help companion animal owners find out more about inherited diseases, especially in their purebred dogs, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine offers a new Genetics Service. Appointments and telephone consultations will assist veterinarians and clients with the diagnosis of inherited diseases. Laboratory support for the Genetics Service will come from the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (School of Veterinary Medicine) where karyotyping, parentage analysis and some disease testing is performed. There are now over 20 DNA tests available in dogs to help eliminate inherited diseases. The Genetics Service will provide counseling to clients who have concerns about inherited diseases in their pets. The Service will also provide support to veterinarians who have questions about this rapidly growing field.
