| Medical Oncology The medical oncology team will evaluate patients and help to come up with a diagnostic and treatment plan. Initially they will help obtain a diagnosis of the type of cancer by either biopsy of fine needle aspiration. It is also important to see how invasive the cancer is locally and if the cancer has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body in order to plan the most effective treatment. To do this, tests will be run which may include blood work, aspiration of lymph nodes, radiographs (X-rays), ultrasounds, CT scans and MRI's. The medical oncologist will then come up with a treatment plan with the client, taking into consideration factors such as quality of life of the patient and the most effective way to treat the patient's tumor. Different treatment modalities may include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. If chemotherapy is to be included in your pet's treatment protocol then the medical oncology unit will administer chemotherapy. The medical oncology service also provides follow-up care to monitor patients who have finished treatment for their cancer. Radiation Therapy Client Information Sheets Useful Links |
